Code Generator

Describe a function, a query or a small script in plain words and get complete, commented code with a short explanation.

Sign in or create a free account, the tool opens in your workspace.

Many coding tasks are small and well defined: a validation function, a SQL query, a file-renaming script. The Code Generator is an AI code writer for these jobs. Describe the task in plain words, name the language or stack, and get code you can read, test and paste into your project.

The tool asks for two things: what the code should do and the programming language. It returns complete code in a fenced block, or several blocks with file names when the task needs more than one file. It follows the idiomatic style of the language, validates inputs, handles errors and never hard-codes passwords or API keys. A short explanation of up to five points follows, covering how the code works, how to run it and what it assumed.

The Code Generator is part of the Developer tools family. For code that already exists, use the Code Explainer or the Bug Fixer.

What you get

  • Complete, runnable code in a fenced block tagged with the language
  • Input validation and error handling written in, not left as a to-do
  • Secrets read from configuration or environment variables, never written in the code
  • A short explanation of up to five points, with any assumption stated plainly
  • Comments and explanation in the language of your request, identifiers in English

What you fill in

What should the code do? required

Include inputs, expected output, framework or library, version and any constraints, such as performance, style or no external packages.

Programming language required

Add the framework and the version if they matter.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Describe the task, its inputs and its output

    Say what goes in and what should come out. "A function that returns true if a string is a valid Italian VAT number" is a request the tool can meet. "VAT code" is not.

  2. Add the constraints that matter

    Mention the framework, the version, a library to use or avoid, and any rule on style or performance.

  3. Name the language or stack

    Fill in the programming language field, for example PHP 8.3, Python, JavaScript (React) or SQL. The version decides which syntax and functions the tool will use.

  4. Generate, read and test

    Read the explanation first, because it lists the assumptions. Then test the code with real and edge-case inputs in your own environment.

Example, input and output

Italian VAT number check in PHP

Input

What should the code do?
A PHP function that validates an Italian VAT number (partita IVA) and returns true or false. No external packages.
Programming language
PHP 8.3

Output

```php
<?php
declare(strict_types=1);
function isValidItalianVat(string $vat): bool
{
$vat = preg_replace('/\s+/', '', strtoupper($vat));
$vat = str_starts_with($vat, 'IT') ? substr($vat, 2) : $vat;
if (!preg_match('/^\d{11}$/', $vat)) {
return false;
}
$sum = 0;
for ($i = 0; $i < 10; $i++) {
$d = (int) $vat[$i];
// Even positions are doubled, minus 9 when above 9
$sum += $i % 2 === 1 ? ($d * 2 > 9 ? $d * 2 - 9 : $d * 2) : $d;
}
return (10 - $sum % 10) % 10 === (int) $vat[10];
}
```

- Strips spaces and an optional IT prefix, then verifies the check digit.
- Assumption, it validates the format, not whether the number is registered.

Illustrative example.

Tips for better results

  • Give one concrete input and the output you expect. One example removes most of the ambiguity.
  • State the version. PHP 8.3 and PHP 7.4, or React with hooks and React with classes, lead to different code.
  • Ask for one unit of work at a time (a function, a query, a component) and build a feature from several requests.

Who uses it, and for what

Freelance developers

Get the first version of a helper, a validation rule or a migration, then adapt it to the project.

Data and marketing analysts

Describe a report in plain words and get the SQL query, with an explanation to check against the table structure.

Site owners who edit their own theme

Ask for a small CSS or JavaScript snippet with a note on where it goes.

Students learning a new language

Compare the generated code with your own solution, then ask the Coding Tutor about the parts you do not follow.

Limits and good practice

  • The tool does not run the code. Testing and security review stay with you.
  • It sees only your request, not your codebase. Paste the relevant interface or table structure if the code has to fit existing parts.
  • Never paste real passwords, keys or customer data into the request. Use placeholders.

Frequently asked questions

Which programming languages does the Code Generator support?

You write the language in a free text field, so you can ask for PHP, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, SQL, Bash, CSS and other common languages and frameworks. Adding the version, such as PHP 8.3 or Python 3.12, helps the tool use current syntax.

Is the generated code ready for production?

It is written to be complete and runnable, with input validation and error handling, but it has not been run or reviewed. Treat it like code from a new colleague: read it, test it and put it through your usual review before it ships.

Can the tool invent functions or libraries that do not exist?

It is instructed not to, and to say so when it is unsure whether something exists in the requested version. Models can still be wrong, so check any unfamiliar function or package against the official documentation.

In which language is the explanation written?

In the language of your request. Write it in Italian and the comments and explanation come back in Italian, while variable and function names stay in English, as most codebases expect.

How is it different from the Code Explainer and the Bug Fixer?

The Code Generator writes new code from a description. The Code Explainer explains existing code. The Bug Fixer proposes a correction for code that does not work.
