Story Generator

Turn a story idea into an original short story with a real arc, or ask for five premises when you only need a starting point.

Story Generator is an AI story generator that starts from your idea, not from a random prompt. Describe the genre, the main characters, the setting and anything that must happen, and it writes an original short story around those choices. Whatever you leave out, it invents for you.

Every story follows a clear arc, a quick opening, a rising conflict, a turning point and an ending that pays off, with concrete detail and natural dialogue instead of stock phrases.

Not ready for a full story? Ask for ideas instead and you get five distinct premises, each with a title, a two-sentence premise and the central conflict. It sits in the Writing assistant family next to Book Ideas and the eBook Planner.

What you get

  • A complete short story with the title as an H2 heading on the first line
  • Every element you specify respected, from point of view to the ending you want
  • Five story premises instead of a story, each with a title and a central conflict, when you ask for ideas
  • Several genuinely different versions when you set more than one result

What you fill in

Your story idea required

Add genre, main characters, setting, audience and anything that must happen. Leave out what you want the AI to invent. Ask for ideas if you only want premises.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Describe your idea

In Your story idea, write the genre, who the story is about, where it happens and what must happen. For example "a gentle mystery in a mountain village in winter, a retired postwoman finds a letter that was never delivered".

  2. Say who it is for and how long

Add the audience, such as children aged 8 to 10 or adults, and a length like "about 600 words". Without an audience, the story is written for a general adult reader with no explicit content.

  3. Choose language, tone and creativity

Higher creativity gives freer twists, lower keeps the story close to your notes. Set two or three results to compare different takes.

  4. Edit and make it yours

Keep what works, rewrite what does not sound like you, then run it through Proofreading.

Example, input and output

Cozy mystery for adults

Input

Your story idea
A gentle mystery set in a mountain village in winter. A retired postwoman finds a letter that was never delivered. For adults, about 600 words.

Output

## The Letter Under the Stove

The envelope had been behind the old post office stove for forty winters, and Ada found it only because the stove finally died. It was addressed in blue ink to Tomas Berger, Upper Farm, a house that had been empty since the avalanche year.

She turned it over twice. No stamp was missing. No address was wrong. Someone had simply never carried it up the hill...

Illustrative example written by the editorial team. The story is cut after the opening for length.

Tips for better results

  • Give the character a want and an obstacle. "She wants to deliver the letter, but the addressee has been gone for years" produces a stronger arc than a list of traits.
  • State the ending if you have one in mind, happy, open or bittersweet, so the turning point leads there.
  • To get premises, write "give me ideas" with the genre and audience, then paste the premise you like back in as a new story idea.

Who uses it, and for what

Parents and teachers

Write a bedtime story or a class reading with the children's names, a setting they know and a lesson to discuss afterwards.

Fiction writers

Test a premise as a short piece before committing to it, or explore the same scene from two points of view.

Brands and content creators

Draft a short narrative for a campaign, a newsletter or a holiday post, with your product as background rather than the hero.

Limits and good practice

  • It writes short fiction, not novels. For longer projects, plan the book with Book Ideas and write scene by scene.
  • It will not reuse copyrighted characters or imitate the style of a specific living author.
  • Read the story before you publish it, check names for unintended resemblances and edit the voice so it is yours.
  • Each story, and each extra version, uses credits from your plan. See the pricing page, or create an account and write your first story.

Frequently asked questions

How does the AI story generator work?

You describe your idea in one field, genre, characters, setting, audience and anything that must happen. The tool writes an original short story that respects every element you gave and invents the rest, with the title as a heading on the first line.

Can I get story ideas instead of a full story?

Yes. Write that you want ideas, with the genre and audience if you have them. You get five distinct premises, each with a title, a two-sentence premise and the central conflict. Paste the one you like back in to get the full story.

How long are the stories?

If your idea states a length, such as about 600 words, the story follows it within the maximum length set in the workspace. Otherwise the length setting is the target. For a tighter piece, lower the length or name a word count in your idea.

Can it write stories for children?

Yes. Say the age group in your idea, for example children aged 6 to 8, and vocabulary and themes are kept suitable for it. Without an audience, the story is written for adults and contains no explicit content.

Who owns the story I generate?

The text is written from scratch for your idea and does not reuse copyrighted characters or copy a living author's style. Treat it as a draft you edit and finish, and check the rules on AI-assisted writing of any publisher or contest before you submit it.
