Math Problem Solver

Step-by-step solutions to math problems, with the reason for each step and a check of the result.

An answer without the steps does not help you with the next exercise. The Math Problem Solver is an AI math problem solver that works like a patient tutor. You write the problem, and it restates what is given and what must be found, solves it in numbered steps with a short reason for each one, checks the result, and gives the final answer on its own line.

It uses the method a student would be expected to use. A faster method, if one exists, gets a one-line mention at the end. If the problem is ambiguous or some data is missing, it says what is missing and solves the most likely interpretation. Math is written as plain text with symbols such as ×, √, ² and π, so it reads cleanly in the workspace.

The tool belongs to the Study and research family. For concepts rather than exercises, try Explain It Simply.

What you get

  • A restatement of the data and of what the problem asks
  • Numbered steps, one operation or idea each, with the reason it is valid
  • A check of the result, by substitution or with an estimate
  • The final answer on its own line, with units where relevant

What you fill in

Math problem required

Write the full problem, including units and what you need to find. For geometry, describe the figure in words.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Write the whole problem

Copy the full text, including units and the question at the end. "Find x" only works when the complete equation is there too.

  2. Describe any figure in words

The tool cannot see a drawing. Write it out, for example "a right triangle with legs of 6 cm and 8 cm, find the hypotenuse".

  3. Choose the output language and generate

The explanation comes in the language you choose.

  4. Follow the steps, then try a similar problem

Read each step and its reason, change one number and solve the new version yourself, then use the tool again to check your work.

Example, input and output

A quadratic equation

Input

Math problem
Solve 2x² − 8x + 6 = 0

Output

**Given:** 2x² − 8x + 6 = 0. **Find:** the values of x.

1. Divide both sides by 2, because every term is a multiple of 2: x² − 4x + 3 = 0.
2. Look for two numbers whose product is 3 and whose sum is −4: −1 and −3.
3. Factor the equation: (x − 1)(x − 3) = 0.
4. A product is zero only when one factor is zero, so x − 1 = 0 or x − 3 = 0.
5. Solve each equation: x = 1 or x = 3.

**Check:** for x = 1, 2 − 8 + 6 = 0. For x = 3, 18 − 24 + 6 = 0. Both values work.

**Answer:** x = 1 or x = 3

Tips for better results

  • Write the problem exactly as it appears in your book or worksheet, including the question at the end.
  • If you cannot type the symbols, use ^ for powers and / for fractions, for example x^2 and 3/4.
  • If your teacher expects a specific method, such as the quadratic formula, say so in the problem.

Limits and good practice

  • AI can make calculation errors. The tool checks its result, but you should follow and verify the steps, especially for graded work.
  • It cannot see images, graphs or handwriting. Problems with figures must be described in words.
  • It is a study aid. Use it to learn the method and check your work, within your school's rules on homework and tests.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI solve math problems step by step?

Yes. The Math Problem Solver restates the problem, solves it in numbered steps with a reason for each one, checks the result and gives the final answer on a separate line. It is designed to show the method, so you can follow every step and repeat it on a similar exercise.

What kind of math problems can it solve?

Typical school and university exercises: arithmetic, percentages, equations and inequalities, systems, functions, geometry and word problems. For geometry, describe the figure in words. Very long or advanced problems, such as proofs, work better when you split them into smaller questions.

Are the answers always correct?

Not always. AI models can make calculation mistakes, which is why the tool checks its own result, for example by substituting it back into the equation. Follow the steps and verify them yourself, especially for graded work. If a step looks wrong, ask again with the problem written more precisely.

Can I upload a photo of the problem?

No, this tool works from text. Type the problem, using ^ for powers and / for fractions if you cannot type the symbols. For a figure, describe it in words, with the lengths and angles you know and what you need to find.

Is using a math solver cheating?

It depends on how you use it and on your school's rules. Copying an answer teaches nothing. Using the steps to understand a method, or to find the mistake in your own solution, is studying. When homework or a test must be your own work, follow your teacher's instructions.
